After the "Emerald Isle" docked in New York City, James went with his mother and four siblings to the Hospital while his four other siblings went on to Utah with the company formed on the ship.

After his mother and three siblings died and were buried in New York City, James and his baby sister Dusine went on to Utah - probably with the company that was formed to take those who had been ill and recovered to Utah.

According to family tradition James' little sister became ill and died not long before the company arrived Utah. James did not want Dusine buried en route and therefore he cared for her as if she were just ill.

James was met in Salt Lake City by his uncles and aunt, Peter Boesen and Rasmus and Bodil (Boesen) Christoffersen.
The officials insisted that the dead baby be buried in Salt Lake to prevent spread of whatever disease she had.
James went on to Ogden with his relatives and died 22 October 1868 - shortly after his arrival in Ogden.
He probably died of typhoid fever or the disease which had killed his mother and siblings.

NOTE: The Ancestral file states that James died two days before Dusine, but
this seems unlikely. See above
