John Raymond Petersen, of Boelus died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. John was born Feb. 16, 1923, in Boelus to Christian and Loretta (Christensen) Petersen.
John was preceded in death by: wife, Esther, on July 5, 1996; and stepdaughter, Irene Mondragon.
John grew up near Boelus and attended rural school District 28 near Boelus. He graduated from Boelus High School in 1941. John was baptized in the Lutheran faith. He entered the United States Navy in January 1941 and was honorably discharged March 1946.
John was united in marriage to Esther Zamora on March 23, 1944, in Los Angeles, Calif. The couple lived in Los Angeles and John worked at Douglas Aircraft and then the Los Angeles Police Department from 1947-1977. He retired and took care of his wife until her death and continued to live in the Los Angeles area. In 1997, John moved to Boelus and continued to live there.
John enjoyed fishing and hunting as well as traveling.
He was a member of the Schipman-Mogensen American Legion Post 201 of Boelus.
He was preceded in death by: parents; sisters, Evelyn Quest and Miriam Schade and infant sister, LeMay Petersen and brothers, Herman, Richard, Stanley and Gilbert Petersen.
Burial was in the Loup Fork Cemetery, Boelus, NE., with full militaary honors.
