BIOGRAPHICAL: Correspondence with Karene Andersen Straw.
Jens' wife was converted to Mormonism and he finally agreed to go to Utah with her.
When he saw conditions on "Emerald Isle" on which they were chartered to sail, he refused to go.
Anne insisted on leaving with their nine children-
-the oldest daughter had married in January 1868, and she and her husband emigrated to Utah later.
Jens returned to Beersted in Snedsted parish, and died there 10 August 1870, a widower, aged 55 years.
He had become an almisselem [poor person] and was buried as a pauper.
[He had sold all his belongings to pay for the trip to Utah.]

Do you remember the Mormons? In studying Norgaard's headstones in
Thisted village archive, I found the following record:

! Houseowner Jens Pedersen Thorsted, born 13 April 1815 in Snedsted.
Died 10 August. Twice he tied the wedding knot, and of the last marriage he was blessed with ten living children.
In his youth and manhood, he was known for his unusual work, for which he was rewarded with an abundant livelihood.

! But then his wife let herself be taken in by Mormon teachings and she was weakened by sorrow over his soul and body cancer. Then two years ago she left him with nine children and nearly all his fortune in order to journey to the Mormon state.

! Grief over that made him so bodily and spiritually weak that at last he was obliged to accept strangers' help.
He died in Beersted where he had lived his life on the 10 August 1870, aged 55 years.
