EMIGRATION: DUP, OUR PIONEER HERITAGE, vol 12:
(Accounts of 1868 voyage of "Emerald Isle."
William Mulder, HOMEWARD TO ZION
Andrew Jensen, HISTORY OF THE SCANDINAVIAN MISSION.

! Ane Kirstine left for America from Liverpool, England, with nine of her children.
They sailed on 11 June 1868.
They sailed in a "shepherded company" sponsored by the LDS church and conditions were geared to the Saints least able to pay for passage. Her husband had been lukewarm about the voyage from the beginning, and when he saw the crowded conditions, he refused to go and returned to his native Snedsted parish.
They sailed on the "Emerald Isle" and arrived in New York City on 14 August 1868.
There were almost 700 passengers on board the ship, most of them Scandinavian.
The crew was uncooperative and someone brought disease on board.
The result was that 37 of the passengers died on the ship and were buried at sea.
Conditions were so bad that this was the last sailing vessel chartered by the church.
One ship, already chartered, arrived later that season, but after 1868 the church chartered only steamships - in spite of the additional cost.
Ane Kirstine and three of her children were ill when they arrived in New York City and were taken to the Hospital, where they died.
Son James and and baby Ducine stayed in New York until death of the others and then they started west with another company; both died enroute. Ane Kirstine had insisted that the four children who were not ill go on with the LDS company to Utah, where they arrived safely.

! DEATH: Certificate of death and burial from New York City, obtained by
Karene Straw by correspondence.
